INTRODUCTION :-
Water Supply and Sanitation has been a priority of Government of Nepal. Various types of urban and rural water supply and sanitation projects are now being implemented within the Government, private and NGO sectors. However, faster urbanization has put pressure on these sectors to diversify their activities and implement multiple projects.

To cater to the increasing demands of drinking water and sanitation facilities for faster growing towns and market centers, Government of Nepal has initiated a community supported water supply and sanitation project with financial assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB). This project is called the “Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Project” (STWSSP).

The Department of Water Supply and Sewerage (DWSS) is the implementing agency and the Ministry of Urban Development is the policy making.

Nepalconsult (P) Ltd. was assigned by DWSS/Government of Nepal to provide services on engineering survey, design and construction supervision for Package 3 towns of Lekhnath and Bandipur and a contract to this effect was signed on October 09, 2001.

DESCRIPTION OF PROJECT AREA :-
Lekhnath Municipality is one of the most densely populated areas in the mid-hills of Nepal. The household survey carried out in 2001 by SWOG within its proposed project area in Lekhnath Municipality showed a population of 38,012 with 7,017 households resulting in an average family size of 5.4 persons per household in the project area of the surveyed wards of Lekhnath Municipality. Household survey in ward no. 10 was not carried out because at the time of the survey, it was not certain whether ward no. 10 would be covered by the water supply system.

Lekhnath Municipality is located in the south-eastern portion of Pokhara Valley (28°6’N to 28°11’N latitude and 84°6’ E to 84°16’E longitude). It situated in Kaski district of the Western Development Region. The municipality shares its borders with Hansapur and Rupakot VDC in the east, Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City in the west, Kalika and Majhthana VDCs in the north and Bharat Pokhari VDC in the south.

It is situated 200 kms west of Kathmandu and 6.25 kms east from Pokhara Sub-Metropolitan City center on the Prithivi Highway connecting Kathmandu with Pokhara.

As per the District Water Supply Office (DWSO), there are 17 gravity water supply schemes in the municipality supplying water through 294 tapstands. These water supply systems are in various stages of completion and some schemes are currently under expansion/completion. The existing systems operate intermittently for a few hours only (Feasibility Study Report, ARD, Dec. 1999).

The feasibility study report of prepared under PPTA in December 1999 envisaged a comprehensive gravity flow water supply system to serve the flat areas of ward nos. 1-5, 7, 8 and 11-15 of Lekhnath Municipality. The covered project households and population as per the PPTA report were 3,647 and 20,058 respectively.

Based on the Consultant’s field surveys and household survey data supplied by the NGO, Social Works Group (SWOG), the final beneficiary project households in year 2002 is 5,550 and the final beneficiary population in year 2002 is 30,237. These project households and population are planned to be served by two proposed Lapsi Danda and Danda Ko Nak water supply systems and two existing Arghaun and Shishuwa-Khudi water supply systems.

At present the Lapsidanda WS system covers 12,400 population in 1,827 households of ward nos. 2-5. Dandakonak WS system covers 22,700 population in 3,523 households of ward nos. 1, 7-9 and 11-13. Similarly, Arghaun WS system covers 1,150 population in 368 households of ward nos. 3,4 and 6 and Shishuwa-Khudi WS system covers 3,750 population in 688 households of ward nos. 8 and 12-15.
